How Ghana’s rising star plunged into an economic crisis - BBC Africa
In 2019, Ghana had the world’s fastest-growing economy after it doubled economic growth.
In 2023, prices of goods are rising by 40% down from 54% in December 2022, which was the highest in 2 decades.
As a result, the country which the World bank described as a rising star saw an unprecedented 3-day demonstration led by mainly young people who say government has mismanaged the economy.
But what caused the slide?

Ghana's Economy Shows Signs of Massive Growth in 2024
Ghana's economy witnessed a notable rebound in the fourth quarter, recording a growth rate of 3.8% following four consecutive quarters of contraction. This growth was primarily driven by expansions in the agriculture and services sectors. However, the country faced significant challenges throughout the year, including reduced government spending and high inflation, resulting in its weakest full-year performance since the onset of the pandemic, with growth at 2.9%.
Despite the resurgence in economic activity, Ghana continues to grapple with external factors such as adverse weather conditions affecting cocoa output and delays in debt restructuring negotiations. These factors pose risks to future growth prospects and economic stability.
To address these challenges, Ghana is actively engaged...
